The tugboat FOULI is gone, vanished, disappeared from it’s moorings on the new pier in Karystos!
Just yesterday it was there, with kids diving off the deck into the sea, having a grand old time.
Vivian and I were talking about it, wondering what was in it’s future, how long it would remain tied up there. She mentioned that the shipyard where it was built was down the road from where the family lived in the ’40’s.
Today we went bathing and lo and behold, it was gone. Sometime between 6:30 p.m Saturday and 3:00 p.m Sunday, they took her away.
Today we drove down to the new boat yard, thinking that they might of taken her there, but she was no where in sight.
Perhaps some enterprising soul purchased her to fix up and return to service again, although I doubt it. She was most likely towed to her final resting place, a salvage yard somewhere on the mainland, to be torn apart and rendered into the raw materials from which she was built.
I’ll try to find out more.
Update Aug. 9, 2011
We stopped at the Port Police Office today and all they could tell us is that the tugboat was towed to Piraeus.
It was deemed to be a hazard, with the children diving off of it’s decks, someone was bound to get injured.
I did a little more research on line and came up with this. Click on the link below and scroll down to the end. You will see a picture of the Fouli being scrapped.
The Fouli was towed to a Piraeus scrap yard by the trawler Marmari.
it exists no more.
