My Fathers Story
My father said that Yiayia’s brother Angelo who was on the ships, brought her the pitcher when she was 16. She was born in 1882, which makes it 1898.
Taky’s Story
The following is information I got from Taky’s. It is his personal knowledge & recollections.
The fish are perch. Taky’s says Pappou bought the pitcher for Yiayia. He was very certain of this. Taky’s also said that Papou went to Belgium to work in mines. Which is correct, and which is common knowledge in the family.
We were both at a loss to explain the contradictions in the story of how Yiayia got the pitcher.
However:
- It IS from Belgium.
- Takys remembers Papou asking for the pitcher, on Sundays, at dinner, to be filled with wine.
- Taky’s says Papou told him he bought it for Yiayia. (vma)
- Pappou Stamatis did go to work at the mines in Belgium. There are mines are located around Mons.
- The pitcher was made at a factory in Nimy les Mons.
It is most likly that Tackys is correct and that Pappou gave the pitcher to Yiayia. (vma Oct 2003)
After thinking about this for years, I am now sure that Takys version is definitely correct, and that it was Papou Stamatis who gave YiaYia the pitcher. And a date of approximately 1898 makes sense. He definitely went to the mines in Belgium before hewas married to YiaYia in 1901.
